A total of fourteen expert dog trainers were consulted to compile this list of the top ten best guard dog breeds. During their evaluation they considered not only a dog’s temperament and physical strength, but its courage, loyalty, and resistance to pain.  There are some dogs who possess all of these qualities but didn’t make the list because of their small size.  Chihuahuas, most breeds of Terriers, and Miniature Schnauzers are certainly brave, but unfortunately can easily be dealt with by an intruder.

1. Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff is a powerful dog, which was originally a cross between the English Mastiff and the Old English Bulldog. Originally bred to find and immobilize poachers, the breed has become popular as a family pet.

2. Doberman Pinscher

Although once commonly used as guard dogs or police dogs, this is less common today. In many countries, Dobermann Pinschers are one of the most recognizable breeds, in part because of their actual roles in society, and in part because of media attention (see temperament). Careful breeding has improved the disposition of this breed, and the modern Dobermann Pinscher is an energetic and lively breed suitable for companionship and family life.
